GENDER CONVERSATIONS BUILDS BRIDGES & SAVES LIVES

New interactive site discussing gender identity, expression & diversity

November 8, 2011, Chicago, IL – Last month writer and trans advocate Jennifer Carr created a one-of-a-kind interactive online community designed to inspire people from all walks of life to dialogue about gender identity and expression. The goal is to create bridges of understanding that would otherwise never happen.

Aside from conferences and special events, it is extremely difficult to access a diverse community discussing transgender/ gender diverse issues on a daily basis, especially related to young children. Carr, a parent of a gender diverse (or transgender) child, recognized this when answering emails from her blog, Today You Are You. She wished there was an easy way to connect people in the trans community with the thousands of allies, parents, friends, siblings, therapists, educators, activists, medical and mental health providers out there who want to learn more and help educate our communities, and so the Gender Conversations site was born.

Gender Conversations is extremely user-friendly. The search function saves time finding the answers you need without wasting time sifting through a long discussion thread. Break out groups unite people who have specific goals or interests. The real-time chat feature sparks instant dialogue with anyone online. Members enjoy having their own public or private member pages complete with personal messaging.

Within the past month members have joined Gender Conversations from all over the globe relating their personal stories, asking questions, sharing cutting edge research, finding resources and connecting with personal and professional experts. This dialogue is absolutely critical for the education that is necessary to improve and save lives in our society.

The transgender community has the highest suicide rate. Research reflects that almost fifty percent of all transgender/ gender diverse young people attempt suicide. Advocates, allies and parents work tirelessly around the world to demystify the perceived stigma associated with transgender individuals. Gender Conversations unites these efforts so that people can collaborate on their collective mission.

It sparks a revolution of understanding within and beyond the trans community. Members have shared that Gender Conversations transforms lives by building bridges between people who were once strangers and now allies with a common goal.
