Fifth circuit with Jillian Michaels today and I am sweating into my eyes. Struggling to lift another rep, I hear little feet popping down the stairs and I squint my burning lids. What are those two up to?
Somehow the kids always seem to make it downstairs when I am working out. Either they ask me questions (with a more than obvious answer) like “Can I drink water?” or “Should I pick up my paints?” or they come to watch me strain and stretch until I am filled with endorphins, not impatience.
Today was a little different. I could see bare little feet from my plank position and heard cautious laughter, like something was up. As I rotated and started some crunches I saw their faces first. Smiling nervously, my daughter and my son were standing in matching ballet outfits – tutus and all. Did they possibly think I’d be angry? How could I be? Giggles filled the room. Can I freeze this moment in my brain for always?
This wonderful time when my 4 and 6 year olds actually adore playing with each other. This special time when my daughter can dress her brother up as she sees fit and he’ll enjoy it just as much? He looks so sweet in the princess and party dresses. And apparently he rocks a mean tutu!
I hope they’ll look back on these days and savor the frivolity of just being kids and friends. I know I will.
Awww…now that is just so cute. Enjoy these days while you can! My lil doll baby has suddenly decided she is 20 and knows everything! And this happened over night. I want my lil girl back!
Oh, we have our days too Melissa!! I try to treasure the times when they seem so little. Hope you are well- Jen
We are well. Just HOT. I am a hot weather wimp. Today right after I go off on my rant my lil girl returns asking me to braid her hair and get out her American Girl dolls and life is good again…for today…LOL
reminds me of zion and lexi…dressed up like harem girls in purple silky veils.
back then, lexi didn’t think a thing of it…that her cousin would don such things and prance as well as she.
three years of public school (for lexi) later and her consciousness of gender ‘rules’ wont allow her to accept zion.
makes me so glad i can homeschool my lovely trans/girl…
may her inocense and guiless soul be free forever!
Dear Moon- I am sorry to hear that any “gender rules” prevent our kids and their friends from expressing who they are. I hope my kids will always feel open when the binary code of this-or-that comes into play. We try to encourage them to see beyond what is considered boy and/or girl, but let’s see how it plays out as they get older.
Let me know how you like homeschooling. Sounds fun and limitless!! Best- Jen
Given the accepting environment and the way you’ve raised them, I suspect they’ll always be fairly close. And you will remember that moment; they will as well. You can always freeze moments–all you need is a camera.
I wish you and your family many more moments like this.
Many thanks Brady!! My camera is my brain most days. These images are inked into my system like tattoos. Changing me forever. Best- Jen
I love that your kids are free to be kids. I see more and more young children who are pushed to be more adult. Playing, dress-up, freedom from “that’s a toy boys play with” and “that’s a game girls play” should be the norm, not an exception. (Yeah, I’m in my 40′s and still resent having been told that I couldn’t have slot cars because they were a “boy” toy… Hrumph! My daughter, by the way, asked for and was given an awesome slot car setup!)
And I have a great mental pic of your children standing there giggling! Thanks for the smile!
I’m so with you Ms. Darkstar!! I asked for a Hot Wheels track in the 70′s and I got the Barbie Townhouse. Not what I asked for!!
I am so happy to share this little slice of life. My Best- Jen
