I am in awe of the grace with which you write of your journey. In an attempt to offer some assistance with your fight with the school, I did a little research and asked many administrators and guidance counselors about how prior situations like this have been handled.

There haven't been any(at least around here).

Most parents are in full on denial at the point where you find yourself. If they aren't convincing themselves that "it's a phase", then they are hiding in shame, hoping no one discovers their secret. If it's any help, all the counselors expressed admiration for the choices you have made and talked about how much pain your daughter will be spared by your acceptance.

Both of your children are so lucky to have parents who accept and love them fully, no matter what. To understand so deeply that you not only realize the need for new decor, but beat yourself up for not seeing it sooner? Jen, you must be as kind with yourself as you are with your kids. You are doing an amazing job teaching the world what acceptance and parenting are all about.

You've brought me to tears. I know my situation is not the same as yours. But, on the easter before Dougie was born, I heard that Welcome to Holland story at a church. It really struck me then. Then I gave birth to this healthy child, lost him to illness and regained someone far more brilliant and vibrant than I can ever imagine.

I know you know you're not alone. This parenting thing can be soooo painful at times. Cry if you need to. Experience every drop of pain that you need to. Because then the joy will be that much sweeter. The more you follow what is truly in your heart, the more the universe will continue to respond to you with love.

Thanks for sharing and for being so honest.

xoxo
